The culture may have had a linguistic shift, so require an intelligence check with proficiency if they know Elvish to decipher an ancient Elven scroll, for example. To make things interesting, consider the culture(s) those ancient writings came from. Depending on the Giant race, they may not have much of a written tradition.įrom a DM's perspective, I'd probably approach it like this: Ancient Orcs, Goblins, and Gnolls aren't likely to have a written language. Ancient Elven cultures may still be using Elven, but depending on the setting, they may have also used Draconic. You may also consider which languages the cultures your character would be studying would have used. I might also toss in Sylvan and Primordial, but I think of those as languages with a more oral tradition than written. I usually go with Draconic, Celestial, Infernal, and Abyssal.
